After Decades in Wellness Design, Here's What the Best Spa Projects Have in Common
After working on wellness projects across hotels, resorts, residential developments, leisure facilities and private homes, I am often asked what separates a good spa from a truly exceptional one.
People are usually expecting a discussion about the latest technology, the newest wellness trend or a particular facility that is attracting attention within the industry.
The truth is much simpler.
The best spa projects all have one thing in common. They begin with a clear understanding of why they exist.
That may sound obvious, but it is surprising how many projects start with a shopping list rather than a vision.
A client decides they need a sauna, a steam room, an ice bath, a vitality pool and a treatment area. Before long, the focus shifts to products, specifications and finishes. Whilst all of these elements are important, they should never be the starting point.
The most successful wellness destinations begin by understanding the people who will use them and the experience they are trying to create.
Every decision that follows becomes much easier.
Over the years, I have also learned that the best projects are never designed around trends alone.
Wellness evolves constantly. New therapies emerge. Consumer preferences shift. Technologies improve.
It can be tempting to chase every new development that appears in the market.
However, the projects that stand the test of time are the ones built around fundamental human needs. People want to relax. They want to recover. They want to disconnect from stress. They want to feel better physically and mentally.
When a wellness space is designed around those timeless principles, it remains relevant long after the latest trend has faded.
Another characteristic shared by the best projects is that they understand the importance of the journey.
Guests rarely remember individual facilities in isolation. What they remember is how the space made them feel.
The transition from a warm thermal experience into a cooling therapy. The atmosphere created by carefully considered lighting. The sense of calm that comes from thoughtful design and intuitive flow.
The most memorable wellness experiences are those where every element works together seamlessly.
In many ways, great spa design is less about adding more and more about ensuring everything has a purpose.
Some of the most successful projects I have been involved with were not the largest or the most expensive.
What they did have was clarity.
Every square metre was carefully considered. Every facility served a specific role. Every design decision supported the overall experience.
That clarity often leads to better operational performance too.
A beautifully designed wellness space is important, but it must also function efficiently behind the scenes. Staff need to work effectively. Maintenance requirements need to be understood. Equipment must be selected with longevity and reliability in mind.
A successful spa is one that performs just as well after ten years as it does on opening day.
Perhaps the most important lesson of all is that wellness should never be treated as an afterthought.
The strongest projects integrate wellness into the wider identity of the brand. Whether it is a luxury hotel, a residential development or a leisure destination, the wellness offering should feel like a natural extension of the overall experience.
When this happens, wellness becomes far more than a facility.
It becomes a reason for guests to choose you over a competitor. It becomes a reason for them to return. It becomes part of your story.
After decades in wellness design, the projects that stand out are not necessarily those with the biggest budgets or the longest list of features.
They are the projects with the clearest vision, the strongest understanding of their audience and the commitment to creating meaningful experiences.
The best spa projects are never really about saunas, steam rooms or pools.
They are about people.
And that is something that never goes out of fashion.
